Featuring over 200 works, the Arte de Portas Abertas (or "Art of Open Doors") project is a street-art initiative aimed at revitalizing sections of Old Town damaged by the 2010 tropical storm. The doors of Rua Santa Maria and those of other nearby streets have been painted and decorated by Portuguese and international artists, transforming the area into a permanent outdoor art gallery.

The Rua de Santa Maria in Funchal. This all began to change in 2010 when Jose Zyberchema launched the Funchal Painted Doors Project. His aim was to revitalise the Zone Velha by bringing art to the area. He contacted a number of artists and they set to work painting the doors of the houses with all manner of quirky designs.
